About NLP

What is NLP?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we interface and communicate with other people and our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create.

NLP is really about what works and what makes people successful and was originated by John Grinder and Richard Bandler for the purpose of making models of human excellence.

We all operate from our own maps of reality. What NLP does is enable us to understand ourselves and others more fully. NLP describes the fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behaviour (programming). NLP is a way of enriching the choices that you have and perceive as available to you.

One of the key aspects in NLP is taking a different perspective on any given situation to enable a deeper understanding of yourself and of other people.NLP works on a conscious and unconscious level, focussing on what you do now and what you want to do differently in the future, which makes it the perfect partner for the Coaching process.

‘NLP is not only about competence and excellence, it is about wisdom and vision.’
Robert Dilts

What is reality?

As human beings all we really know is our perceptions of reality.

We all have our own unique map of reality that we have created - it forms how we relate to the world around us and how we filter our experiences. We use representational systems to make sense of our internal and external worlds of sight, sound, feeling, smell and taste.

Our maps guide our behaviours and our language. We use deletions, distortions and generalisations in our language to make sense and organise our reality.

Therefore, the more we can learn and understand about how our map works, the more we can enrich our lives and the more choices we have.

‘Excellence comes from having many choices, wisdom comes from having multiple perspectives.’
Robert Dilts
